Italy faces scrutiny over mental health stigma after European Court ruling

Mental health has become a central topic in Italy's public debate, amplified by figures such as musician Fedez, singer Lady Gaga, politicians and intellectuals. Commentators argue that the language of "health" and "mind" tends to pathologise emotions, framing distress as a security issue and encouraging diagnostic and treatment approaches rather than broader wellbeing perspectives.

A recent European Court of Human Rights judgment condemned Italy for the death of Riccardo Magherini, ruling that the state failed to protect a vulnerable person with psychiatric difficulties and did not provide an independent investigation. The court ordered compensation for moral damages to Magherini’s family, highlighting concerns about violent immobilisation and inadequate safeguards for individuals with mental disorders.
