Italy faces sharp electricity and gas price hikes ahead of autumn
Analysts at Segugio.it project that Italy's wholesale electricity and gas prices could jump about 26% by the end of the year, with the third‑quarter price expected to rise roughly 31% above today’s fixed‑rate offers. The firm advises consumers to lock in fixed‑rate contracts for 12‑24 months to protect against winter‑time price spikes.
At the same time, a pronounced regional imbalance has emerged. In the south and the islands, abundant daytime solar generation has driven spot prices down to near‑zero levels, creating the possibility of virtually free midday charging for electric vehicles and large‑scale energy storage. The association Italia Solare highlights the need for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to capture this surplus and smooth supply, while businesses are urged to shift heavy electricity loads to these low‑price periods to lower operating costs.
