Italy faces supermarket shortages due to trucker road blockades

Road blockades organized by truck drivers are causing significant supply chain disruptions across Italy, particularly in the southern regions of Campania, Apulia, and Calabria. The protests have led to empty supermarket shelves, shortages of essential goods such as eggs, flour, meat, dairy, fruits, and vegetables, as well as fuel scarcities.

In response, the Italian government is preparing to intervene. Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, announced that the Ministry of the Interior has begun identifying protesters to dismantle the blockades, noting potential criminal consequences. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has characterized the demonstrations as illegal.

The disruptions are also being felt in Lazio, Lombardy, and Veneto. Some retailers have reported that planned promotions have been canceled due to the transport interruptions, and remaining stock may be sold at full price to offset supply difficulties.
