Italy faces surge in femicides following series of partner killings

Italy is facing a surge in femicides, with six women killed by partners or former partners in the days following August 15. Recent incidents include a 72-year-old woman killed by stoning in Calabria, a 50-year-old Polish woman stabbed in Coleferro, and a 39-year-old woman killed near Venice despite previous police reports regarding domestic violence.

Femicide is now a specific offense in the Italian criminal code and is treated as a national emergency. However, officials note that a school-based prevention campaign for healthy relationships was recently hindered by a government requirement for parental consent for student participation.

In response to the violence, regional leaders in Calabria and Friuli Venezia Giulia are calling for increased funding for anti-violence centers, family clinics, and mandatory training for law enforcement and healthcare workers. Meanwhile, the term ‘femminicidio’ has become the most searched word on the Treccani digital platform in 2026, reflecting the issue's prominence in public discourse.
