Italy football slips to 15th in FIFA ranking as federation eyes new coach

Italy's national team has fallen to 15th place in the FIFA world rankings, the lowest position since June 2019, after failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The drop places the Azzurri behind nations such as Switzerland and Croatia and will affect future draw pots for qualifiers and tournaments.

FIGC president Giovanni Malagò said the federation will move quickly to appoint a new head coach, involving former player Paolo Maldini and technical advisor Leonardo in the selection process. He noted that a high‑profile candidate such as Pep Guardiola remains a “dream” but emphasized the need to find a profile that fits the team’s economic and sporting realities. The ranking list shows France, Argentina, Spain, England, Brazil, Morocco, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, Mexico, Colombia, Germany, Croatia and Switzerland ahead of Italy.

The federation hopes the new leadership will restore Italy’s competitiveness and improve its standing in upcoming European and World Cup qualifying campaigns.
