Italy finds ten WWII bombs under Rome‑Naples railway line

During maintenance work on a bridge over the Rome‑Naples railway near Formia, workers uncovered ten unexploded World War II ordnance devices weighing roughly 500 kg in total. The explosives, lacking fuzes, were secured by the Italian Army’s 21st Engineer Regiment and civil‑protection officials. The railway was closed from the evening of the discovery until early the next morning, halting passenger services and causing cancellations and delays for commuters.

Specialist sappers extracted the bombs throughout the night and transferred them to a secure location for disposal. No injuries were reported, and the area around the densely populated site was cordoned off to ensure public safety.
