Italy food market sees mixed trends in fruit and vegetable prices

The Italian agri-food sector is experiencing significant price fluctuations driven by seasonal changes and extreme weather. While some seasonal products are seeing price decreases, others have experienced sharp increases.

Wholesale prices for certain summer vegetables, such as field zucchini, have dropped by 20%. In the fruit sector, Italian citrus varieties like the Miyakawa are maintaining stable wholesale prices. Grapes are seeing a temporary slowdown in consumption due to cooler weather, leading to lower wholesale prices for several varieties, including seedless and Red Globe. Additionally, the pomegranate season has begun, and chestnut harvests are underway.

In contrast, datterini tomatoes have seen a dramatic price surge following the summer of 2026. Wholesale prices in some Italian markets have reached as high as 9.50 euros per kilogram, with prices at the CAR Roma reaching 5.80 euros per kilogram. This spike, which has seen datterini prices surpass more premium varieties like bull's heart tomatoes, is attributed to extreme heat and prolonged drought during the summer season, which substantially reduced crop yields.
