Italy food transparency: Calls for mandatory ingredient origin labeling

Calls for increased transparency regarding food ingredients and origins are gaining momentum in Italy. In Tuscany, a survey indicates that 85% of residents support ‘talking menus’ that explicitly state the provenance of primary ingredients in restaurants, pizzerias, and fast-food outlets.

Coldiretti Toscana is advocating for mandatory origin labeling on all commercial foods. The organization argues that citizens have a right to know the origin of what they eat to make informed choices. They are currently petitioning the European Union to extend origin indications to all foods and to reform customs codes regarding ‘Made in Italy’ labeling.

Similarly, in Abruzzo, the association ‘Tartufo Abruzzo’ has issued an appeal for clearer information in restaurant menus concerning the use of fresh truffles versus industrial truffle-flavored sauces. The group notes that while industrial condiments are legal, they often contain minimal truffle content. They emphasize that clear labeling is necessary to protect consumers from confusion and to support local producers who use authentic fresh truffles.
