Italy food waste per capita falls below 500 grams weekly

Italy's weekly food waste per capita has fallen below the 500-gram threshold, reaching 493.7 grams. This represents an 11.17% decrease compared to the 555.8 grams recorded in August 2025.

According to the Waste Watcher International 2026 report, monitored by the University of Bologna, the most wasted items are fresh fruit, bread, and vegetables. This decline brings the country closer to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Target 12.3, which aims for a threshold of 369.73 grams per week by 2030.

Regional data shows varying trends: Northern Italy has the lowest waste at 472.2 grams per week. While Southern Italy showed a 10% improvement, Central Italy saw a 15% increase in waste, reaching 510 grams per capita.
