Italy energy costs rise as gas and fuel prices surge
Italy is experiencing a significant surge in energy and fuel costs. According to ARERA, gas prices for vulnerable customers rose by 6.9% in August, reaching a reference price of 143.72 cents per cubic meter. This increase is expected to add approximately 102.6 euros to the annual expenditure of a typical household.
Fuel prices for gasoline and diesel are also climbing. National average self-service prices for gasoline have reached 2.039 euros per liter, while diesel stands at 2.147 euros per liter. On motorways, costs are even higher, with diesel averaging 2.221 euros per liter. These increases are driven by rising international crude oil prices, including Brent crude, which rose to $94.88 per barrel.
To mitigate the impact, the Italian government is considering an extension of diesel excise duty cuts until September 10. Vice Premier Matteo Salvini indicated that work is underway to address long-term solutions, potentially including targeted aid for self-employed workers and pensioners. Meanwhile, industrial production prices have also seen an uptick, rising 2.4% in July compared to June and 7.8% year-on-year, largely due to energy component pressures.
