Italy fuel prices rise as diesel tax discount expires

Fuel prices in Italy are experiencing volatility following the expiration of a 6.1 cent diesel tax discount on October 6. This expiration has led to an immediate increase in diesel costs, with Eni raising its recommended price cap to 2.25 euros per liter.

While the government intended to implement a 'mobile excise duty' mechanism to use excess VAT revenue from rising energy prices to offset these costs, the necessary interministerial decree from the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (Mase) and the Ministry of Economy and Finance (Mef) has not yet been published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale.

Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, has stated that the government is working to extend discounts provided by oil companies and is also focusing on increasing refinery production to stabilize the supply chain. Meanwhile, some motorists in San Marino are traveling to the Titano region to take advantage of lower prices and Smac discounts, which remain available until October 31.
