Italy funds €880k for school road safety and volunteer policing

Rome's municipal government approved a budget adjustment that earmarks €380,000 for the experimental phase of 13 new school streets. The plan, part of a broader safety strategy, includes installations of urban furniture and traffic deterrents on streets such as via Jaime Pintor 6 (Municipio III) and via Romolo Balzani 55 (Municipio V). The work is scheduled to begin between September and December 2026, with the aim of improving safety for students and families. "Con queste misure diamo forma e continuità a un impegno strutturale per trasformare Roma in una città a misura di studenti e famiglie," said Rome Capital Mobility Assessor Eugenio Patanè.

The Lombardy regional government approved a €500,000 contribution to support projects run by third‑sector organisations in partnership with local police forces. The funding, announced by Regional Security and Civil Protection Assessor Romano La Russa, targets initiatives that promote civic coexistence, road safety and a culture of legality. Grants of up to €30,000 per project will be awarded, covering activities from school awareness sessions to the revitalisation of degraded public spaces.

Both measures aim to strengthen urban safety, enhance community involvement, and protect vulnerable road users across Italian municipalities.
