Italy gas storage exceeds 85% as Ravenna regasification boosts supply

Italy is approaching its gas storage targets for the upcoming winter season, with current levels exceeding 85% and expected to reach 90% by October 31. This high level of storage is above the European average, providing a buffer against potential supply disruptions or price spikes.

The regasification plant in Ravenna has become a key component of the national gas system. The FSRU BW Singapore, which began operations in early 2025, has delivered 1.4 billion cubic meters of gas in the first eight months of 2026. These imports have primarily originated from the United States and several African nations, including Algeria, Mauritania, Senegal, Egypt, and Congo.

Despite rising national gas demand, which increased by 15% in August compared to the previous year, the diversification of routes and the contribution of the Ravenna facility have helped maintain stable import levels. However, experts warn that high storage levels alone may not fully protect against price volatility driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and uncertainty regarding supplies from the Persian Gulf.
