Italy generational gap reaches 136cm, report finds
The VII 2025 Report, presented at Luiss University and prepared by Professor Luciano Monti for the Fondazione RiES, indicates that the generational gap in Italy has reached a theoretical height of 136 centimeters. This represents a significant increase from the 100 centimeters recorded in 2006.
Using the Generational Disparity Index (GDI), the study analyzes 14 domains, including pensions, public debt, poverty, gender equality, income, wealth, and family welfare. The findings suggest that the current economic and social system is systematically penalizing citizens under 35 by restricting access to stable employment, housing, and family stability.
The report highlights a trend of economic segregation where national resources are utilized to maintain existing structures at the expense of future generations. This environment is driving a rise in youth emigration; the percentage of young people planning to stay in Italy has dropped from 22.7% in 2006 to less than 20%, while 65.1% of children from mixed-nationality couples view moving abroad as their only option.
