Italy fuel prices rise amid Middle East tension warnings
Fuel prices in Italy are facing significant upward pressure, with FederPetroli Italia President Michele Marsiglia warning that diesel could reach 3 euros per liter in the coming months. This potential surge is linked to geopolitical instability in the Middle East, specifically regarding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global transit point for oil and gas.
While the Italian government implemented a 17-cent per liter excise tax reduction on diesel valid until August 25, recent price increases have largely neutralized the impact of this measure. Current diesel prices on the national road network are hovering around 2.099 euros per liter, while highway prices have returned to levels seen earlier in the month at approximately 2.173 euros per liter.
Gasoline prices are also approaching the 2-euro threshold, with national averages for self-service stations reported at 1.994 euros per liter. Consumer group Codacons has highlighted long-term trends, noting that over the last 30 years, gasoline prices in Italy have nearly doubled and diesel prices have almost tripled. Political figures, including Giuseppe Conte, have criticized the government's response as insufficient to combat rising energy costs and inflation.
