Italy grapples with housing emergency in Verona, Como and Spinazzola

Caritas diocese of Verona reports a rising housing emergency, with 17% of people seeking help and a permanent fund of €210,000 used for rent arrears and maintenance. The organization plans new initiatives to guarantee rent payments, support vulnerable families and reactivate vacant properties.

In the province of Como, 106 applications were received for only nine public apartments, highlighting acute demand. Local officials note 18 homes have been allocated since 2024, and collaboration with the housing agency Aler is helping refurbish and re‑assign municipal units.

In Spinazzola, 16 public housing units remain empty while dozens of families await allocation. Regional councilor Tonia Spina has called for an urgent parliamentary hearing to address delays, missing water meters and the risk of vandalism, urging the activation of the ARCA BAT agency to manage public housing more efficiently.
