Italy grapples with lifeguard shortage and food bans on private beaches

Italy and Romania are experiencing an acute shortage of lifeguards on their summer beaches. In Italy, the profession has become unattractive because lifeguards earn only 5-6 euros net per hour, work extended shifts without days off, and face significant legal liabilities. The shortage raises safety concerns for tourists during the peak season.

At the same time, several private beaches in Italy have introduced rules prohibiting visitors from bringing food from home. Beach operators argue that outside meals create hygiene problems, attract insects, generate waste and increase cleaning costs. Tourists complain about the extra expense of buying meals on site, and consumer groups warn that a blanket ban may infringe on customer rights. The disputes could lead to legal challenges over concession contracts and consumer protection laws.
