Italy green infrastructure upgrades: new wastewater treatment plants at Trapani Airport and Lake Garda

The Sicilian government approved works at Vincenzo Florio Airport in Trapani‑Birgi to upgrade its wastewater treatment plant and create an extra‑Schengen arrivals area. The contract, awarded to Ingegneria Costruzioni Colombrita and Water Technology Company, is valued at about €1.1 million within a total investment of just over €1.7 million. Upgrades will expand the biological treatment section to handle up to two million passengers per year and add automated screening, sand and carbon filters, plus an ecological island for waste collection.

In northern Italy, a €314.5 million project for the southern shore of Lake Garda has been launched. The plan includes a 60‑km sewer network, five pumping stations and a 9.8‑km sub‑aquatic pipeline, feeding a central plant capable of serving the equivalent of 200,000 inhabitants. Completion is targeted for 2034, with the first phase due by 2030. The scheme integrates water reuse for irrigation of around 700 ha of farmland and aims to replace a 50‑year‑old system.
