Italy healthcare advocates push for stronger local services and Alzheimer's cost protections
Healthcare advocates and unions in Italy are pushing for stronger territorial medical services and increased protections for vulnerable patients. At a conference in Pontignano, Spi Cgil Siena, regional institutions, and healthcare professionals discussed the need to reinforce the National Health Service (SSN) to ensure proximity of care and combat the trend toward privatization.
In a related legal development, Cgil, Spi, and Federconsumatori have launched legal initiatives following a Court of Cassation ruling regarding Alzheimer's patients. The ruling suggests that for patients in advanced stages of Alzheimer's or with severe neurodegenerative pathologies, the costs for residential care (RSA) should be fully covered by the national health service rather than families. The goal is to establish a national law to prevent families from bearing high monthly fees for services that possess a significant therapeutic component.
