Italy healthcare advocates warn of Alzheimer’s care crisis

Healthcare advocates and local officials in Italy are raising alarms regarding the insufficient support and infrastructure for Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers. In the Arezzo area, Antonio Rauti, president of the Fossombroni nursing home, has highlighted a critical shortage of resources. He noted that in 2023, the region faced thousands of cases of Alzheimer’s and cognitive impairment, arguing that small budget surpluses are inadequate to address the complex psychological and economic needs of families.

In the Fano district, political figures Marta Ruggeri and Dimitri Tinti have criticized regional resolutions regarding the expansion of residential care beds. They pointed out that while the regional government has authorized an increase in beds, these authorizations do not guarantee accreditation or contracts with the regional health service. Consequently, families may be forced to pay full private rates, estimated at approximately 3,600 to 3,840 euros per month, to access care. Critics argue that without proper state-subsidized integration, the expansion fails to assist economically vulnerable populations and does not address the growing waiting lists for non-self-sufficient elderly citizens.
