Italy hearing health and deaf community initiatives

In observance of World Deaf Day, health experts and sports organizations in Italy are highlighting the importance of hearing health and inclusion. According to the Ente nazionale sordi Ets-Aps, approximately 7 million people in Italy—roughly 12% of the population—suffer from hearing impairments. Additionally, an estimated 40,000 to 60,000 people utilize Italian Sign Language (LIS).

Medical professionals, including Professor Stefano Di Girolamo from Tor Vergata University, emphasize that universal neonatal screening is vital for early detection. Early intervention through prosthetic rehabilitation can ensure normal cognitive development in children. Technological advancements, such as cochlear implants that convert sound into bioelectrical energy and AI-enhanced hearing aids for the elderly, are playing critical roles in managing hearing loss and preventing cognitive decline.

On the social and athletic front, the Italian deaf women's national volleyball team recently concluded a training camp in Trevi, Umbria. This initiative, held in collaboration with the Federazione Sport Sordi Italia (FSSI), is part of the Umbria4Deaf project aimed at promoting inclusion through sports and music.
