Italy heating season: regional regulations and maintenance tips

As cooler weather arrives in Italy, residents are preparing for the heating season. National regulations dictate specific start dates and usage limits for radiators based on regional climatic zones.

In Zone E, which includes northern cities like Milan, Turin, and Venice, heating can begin on October 15 and must end by April 15, with a maximum of 14 hours of use per day. Zone D, including Rome and Florence, starts on November 1 with a 12-hour daily limit. Zone C, covering cities such as Naples and Bari, begins on November 15 with a 10-hour limit. In the warmer Zone B (coastal areas of Sicily, Calabria, and Sardinia), heating is permitted from December 1 to March 31 for up to 8 hours daily. Zone A, the warmest regions like Lampedusa, allows heating from December 1 to March 15 for a maximum of 6 hours per day. Mountain municipalities in Zone F face no specific limits.

Additionally, experts advise caution when restarting stoves after months of inactivity. Before lighting wood or pellet stoves, it is essential to clean ash, soot, and residues from the combustion chamber and ash drawers. It is also critical to inspect the chimney and smoke evacuation systems to ensure that deposits do not compromise safety or efficiency.
