Italy heatwave: 19 cities under red alert due to extreme heat
Italy is experiencing a persistent and intense heatwave driven by the African anticyclone. The Ministry of Health has maintained a red alert for 19 cities, including Rome, Naples, Florence, and Palermo, due to extreme health risks. Additionally, several cities such as Milan, Brescia, and Venice have been placed under orange alert.
Meteorological forecasts suggest a potential intensification of heat between August 11 and 17, with temperatures expected to reach 39°C in Rome and approximately 38°C in Milan. While some instability and potential violent thunderstorms, hail, and wind gusts are expected in Northern Italy due to the interaction of cooler high-altitude air with surface heat, these are not expected to provide significant relief from the heatwave.
In Campania, regional civil protection has issued a yellow weather alert for several areas, warning of isolated thunderstorms and potential hydrogeological risks. In Tuscany, temperatures in Florence have recently exceeded 40°C, with high nighttime temperatures also causing discomfort.
