Italy highlights criminal asset tracking at UNTOC conference
The 13th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) opened in Vienna on October 19. The summit focuses on strengthening international cooperation to combat organized crime and emerging criminal trends.
In a video address, Italian Justice Minister Carlo Nordio emphasized that the Palermo Convention embodies lessons learned from Italy’s fight against organized crime. He advocated for transforming these national experiences into stronger international cooperation and concrete results. Nordio highlighted Italy’s pioneering use of INTERPOL’s ‘Silver Notice’ to track transnational criminal assets and noted the country’s expertise in the social reuse of confiscated property.
The conference, scheduled to run until October 23, will negotiate resolutions on several critical issues, including the protection of cultural property, combating illicit firearms trafficking, addressing international drug trafficking networks, and tackling environmental crimes.
