Italy highlights historical memoirs and cinematic tributes to national memory

Several cultural and historical works are being highlighted in Italy, focusing on significant national memories and personal testimonies.

In Ferrara, director Manuel Benati is filming ‘Lo stato del silenzio’, a movie centered on the case of Federico Aldrovandi, who died in 2005 following a confrontation with police. The production includes courtroom scenes to depict the legal battle for justice sought by the Aldrovandi family.

In Avellino, Prefect Armando Forgione will present his book, ‘Arrivederci, ma quando… Memorie di un frate errante’. The work explores the life of Frà Vitantonio, a Franciscan friar who fled Italy following the unification in 1861 to avoid mandatory military service.

Historical documentation is also being showcased through the presentation of Antonio Caggiano’s wartime diary. The journal provides a firsthand account of the inhumane conditions faced by Italian Military Internees (IMI) during World War II after refusing to collaborate with Nazi-fascism.

Additionally, historian Pier Luigi Farolfi has received a special mention at the 51st Casentino Literary Prize for his book regarding the liberation of Portico and San Benedetto from Nazi-fascism in 1944, a work dedicated to the memory of partisan Iris Versari.
