Italy holds elections for High Council of the Judiciary

Over 9,000 magistrates are voting on October 25 and 26, 2026, to elect 20 members of the Consiglio Superiore della Magistratura (CSM) for the 2027-2031 term. The election features more than 60 candidates competing for seats reserved for judges, including roles in the Court of Cassation, merit-based judges, and prosecutors.

The vote follows a recent constitutional referendum that rejected a justice reform which would have fundamentally restructured the CSM by introducing a lottery system for certain members. This election is characterized by a tension between established judicial currents and independent candidates. Some observers note that while many candidates campaign against the influence of judicial currents, several are backed by these traditional power structures.

Political and institutional dynamics are also influencing the process, with discussions regarding judicial independence, salary adjustments, and the relationship between the judiciary and the government. The results will determine the composition of the body responsible for the self-governance of the Italian judiciary, including appointments, transfers, and disciplinary actions.
