Italy holds memorials for victims of fatal road accidents

Commemorations are being held in Italy for victims of fatal road accidents. In Cosenza, friends and community members gathered to honor the memory of Ilaria Mirabelli, two years after she died when she was ejected from a vehicle on the road between Lorica and Aprigliano.

Mario Molinari faces charges of aggravated road homicide regarding the incident. Prosecutors allege he was driving at an unsafe speed while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The legal process has faced delays, including a change of judge and a transition to a collegiate tribunal, with the next trial phase expected to proceed in 2026.

In Monreale, a memorial plaque was placed on the SS 186 to mark the site where cyclist Mirela Nicoleta Rusu was killed two months ago. Rusu, a Romanian national, was struck by a car performing an illegal overtaking maneuver while training with her partner and a cycling club. A blessing ceremony was held at the site, attended by family, local officials, and members of the Asd Sport Nutrition cycling association.
