Italy honors Resistance fighters and women's suffrage legacies

New historical initiatives in Italy are working to preserve the individual memories of those involved in the Resistance and the subsequent achievement of democratic rights.

In Omegna, authors Filippo Colombara and Virginia Paravati have produced a book titled “Con la testa in mezzo all'erba,” which documents the lives and identities of sixty individuals—including civilians—who died for freedom between 1943 and 1945. The work aims to provide a personal, human dimension to the partisan struggle in the Piedmont region, moving beyond collective events to focus on individual biographies.

Meanwhile, in Spezia, the ISR (Istituto Spezzino di Ricerca) and Fondazione Carispezia have launched a commemorative project titled “Elettrici del 1946.” Running through 2026, the project features monthly publications highlighting women who transitioned from roles in the Resistance to exercising their right to vote in 1946. The series honors figures such as Maria Cervia and Vanda Bianchi, documenting their contributions to the fight for liberty and the establishment of a democratic Italy.
