Italy hosts breast cancer awareness initiatives through art and science

Various initiatives in Italy are using art and scientific discussion to raise awareness for breast cancer and support survivors.

In Chieti, the oncology radiotherapy department is hosting ‘Kintsugi sulla mia pelle’, an exhibition running from October 9 to 31, 2026. The project features photographs by Roberto Colacioppo, directed by Sandra D’Agostino, which depict the scars of 14 women who underwent surgery and postoperative radiotherapy. The exhibition uses the Japanese kintsugi metaphor—repairing broken ceramics with precious metals—to frame scars as symbols of rebirth rather than things to be hidden.

In Pontedera, the association ‘Non più sola’ is presenting ‘Ri-Nascita’, a project centered on the stories of six women who have faced breast cancer. The initiative includes an exhibition at Civico 35, available until October 19, alongside medical conferences. These events aim to provide information on therapeutic innovations and address specific health topics, such as breast cancer in post-menopausal women, involving specialists from the Tuscan senological network.
