Italy hosts Libya, Turkey and Qatar in Rome to tighten migration security

Senior officials from Italy, Libya, Turkey and Qatar met in Rome to review and deepen cooperation on migration and maritime security in the central Mediterranean. The quadrilateral mechanism focused on technical coordination against human‑trafficking networks, strengthening Libya’s coast guard, and discussing a possible joint operations centre.

Libya’s delegation reiterated that the country will not become a destination for migrant resettlement, describing migration as a sovereign, security and humanitarian issue. It called for an international partnership to bolster Libyan defence and interior ministries, support voluntary return programmes and fund development projects in migrant‑origin regions. Italy, represented by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s diplomatic adviser, and senior advisers from Turkey and Qatar participated in the talks, underscoring a broader convergence among regional actors to manage irregular migration flows toward Europe.
