Italy household debt shows significant regional disparities
Data from Crif and CGIA di Mestre reveal significant regional disparities in household debt across Italy. Trentino-Alto Adige leads the nation in monthly debt repayments, with an average installment of 455 euros against an average debt of nearly 57,800 euros. Northern Italian provinces, including Milan, Bologna, and Treviso, also report high average monthly installments.
In contrast, southern regions such as Calabria, Sicily, and Sardinia report much lower average monthly repayments, typically around 240 euros, with significantly lower average debt levels. In Reggio Calabria, the average debt is approximately 17,134 euros.
Regarding consumer debt—which excludes mortgages—Tuscany ranks second in Italy for indebtedness levels, following Umbria. In the province of Livorno, consumer debt averages 7,679 euros per family, representing a 4.8% increase compared to 2024. Analysts suggest that inflation and stagnant wages have reduced purchasing power, forcing many middle-class families to rely on credit to maintain their standard of living and cover daily expenses or durable goods.
