Italy, Hungary and Croatia introduce new highway toll measures

From June 7, 2026 Italy will launch a compensation scheme for drivers delayed by construction‑related traffic jams on its motorways. Eligible motorists can receive partial or full refunds of toll fees based on the length of the delay and distance travelled, with applications submitted via an online portal. The system initially covers stretches operated by a single concessionaire and expands on December 1, 2026 to routes with multiple operators, while excluding incidents caused by emergencies, accidents or weather.

Hungary is offering a discounted annual toll sticker for residents of Pest, Fejér, Komárom‑Esztergom and Győr‑Moson‑Sopron counties affected by the long‑term reconstruction of the M1 motorway. The sticker costs 15,000 forints for private cars.

In Croatia, current toll rates for the 2026 summer season remain unchanged, with detailed prices listed for major routes such as Zagreb‑Rijeka, Zagreb‑Split and others. The government plans to introduce an electronic, barrier‑free toll system, with a pilot rollout expected this autumn and full implementation targeted for March 1 of the following year.
