Italy hunting law reform faces M5S's million amendments, Ispra criticism

The Italian government has tabled draft law 1552 to overhaul the 1992 hunting framework (law 157/1992). The Five Star Movement (M5S) announced it has filed one million amendments, arguing the proposal threatens biodiversity, animal welfare and the Constitution. The Democratic Party (PD) calls the draft “unenviable” and urges a complete rejection, citing lack of an EU‑compliance assessment and potential conflicts with EU live‑capture directives. The institute Ispra, Italy’s environmental research agency, warned that the reform could treat wildlife as a consumable resource, undermining technical‑scientific oversight. Forza Italia has submitted 14 amendments seeking tighter limits near beaches and other sensitive areas. The debate highlights a split within the centre‑right coalition over the extent of liberalisation versus protection of wildlife habitats.
