Italy implements agrivoltaics and biomimicry to combat agricultural heat stress

Agricultural innovators in Italy are employing new technologies to combat extreme heat and drought. At the Quintosapore farm in Umbria, Alessandro and Nicola Giuggioli use biomimicry and natural selection to cultivate resilient crops. By saving seeds from plants that survived the 2022 drought, they are developing varieties with biological memory to withstand rising temperatures without relying on GMOs.

In a separate effort to manage microclimates, researchers from the University of Bari, ENEA, and the startup Agridatalog are testing agrivoltaic systems. These installations combine solar panels with crop production to mitigate environmental stress. Field measurements at pilot sites in Puglia and Calabria have shown that agrivoltaic systems can reduce soil temperatures by more than 20°C compared to directly exposed areas. These studies are investigating how different panel configurations and heights affect crops such as figs, olives, lemons, and lavender.
