Italy implements automated tax audits and sees rise in savings
Italy is implementing structural changes to its fiscal monitoring systems for 2026. The Agenzia delle Entrate is moving toward more systematic and automated tax audits, utilizing sophisticated tools to cross-reference bank account movements with various public registries, including income declarations, invoices, and land registry data. This shift aims to identify tax evasion by comparing financial flows with reported income.
Simultaneously, there is a notable trend in private savings within the country. As of 2025, private savings reached 1.5 trillion euros, with over 250 billion euros allocated to deposit accounts. Driven by economic uncertainty and inflation, Italian savers are increasingly utilizing deposit accounts as secure refuges, benefiting from the protections offered by the Fondo Interbancario di Tutela dei Depositi, which covers up to 100,000 euros per depositor.
