Italy to end diesel excise tax discount on September 10

Italy is set to end its general diesel excise tax discount on September 10, leading to potential price increases at the pump. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated the shift toward more 'targeted' measures is necessary to avoid subsidizing those who do not require assistance, such as individuals traveling from France to refuel in Italy.

To mitigate the impact on specific sectors, the Ministry of Transport has launched a tax credit platform. Transport companies and bus rental services using Euro 5 and Euro 6 vehicles can apply for a credit covering up to 70% of the increased diesel costs incurred between March and August 2026, compared to February 2026 prices. Applications for this credit must be submitted via the Customs and Monopolies Agency platform by September 15, 2026.

While the government works on further targeted aid for vulnerable families and the transport sector, there are ongoing discussions regarding the implementation of fringe benefits or fuel vouchers for employees to offset rising costs.
