Italy implements new anti-smog and traffic restrictions
New air quality and anti-smog measures have entered into force across parts of Italy, including Rome and the province of Vicenza, to combat PM10 pollution during the autumn and winter seasons.
In Rome, the 'Fascia Verde' macro-area has implemented new traffic restrictions effective October 1, 2026. These rules include a permanent ban on petrol vehicles up to Euro 2 and diesel vehicles up to Euro 3. Time-based limitations also apply to Euro 4 diesel vehicles. Authorities are increasing surveillance via electronic gates to enforce these rules, though exemptions remain for disabled persons, essential public services, and historic vehicles.
In the province of Vicenza, measures are active from October 1, 2026, until April 30, 2027. While the structural ban on Euro 5 diesel vehicles in the 'green level' has been postponed to October 2027, temporary compensatory measures have been approved. These include extending traffic limitation time slots until 19:30 and restricting certain heating systems and biomass generators in municipalities with populations exceeding 100,000 during high-alert days.
