Italy implements new residence permit regulations
New regulations regarding work residence permits have come into effect as of May 22, 2026. These changes align with European Union standards aimed at simplifying and unifying procedures for foreign workers within EU member states, while providing greater clarity and protection of rights.
Key updates include specific timelines for the issuance and renewal of permits. The Single Work Permit (Permesso Unico Lavoro) must be issued by the Questura within 30 days of the application being completed. Additionally, the Questura is required to renew all residence permits within 90 days of the application submission. Under the new decree, foreign nationals must now submit their renewal applications 90 days prior to the expiration of their current permit.
