Italy implements new salary transparency laws
Italy has implemented Legislative Decree 96/2026, a new regulatory framework designed to enhance salary transparency and promote gender pay equality. The law, which aligns with EU Directive 2023/970, became operational on June 7.
Under the new rules, all employees have the right to request information regarding average salary levels within their company, specifically broken down by gender for roles of equal value. Employers are required to provide a written response to these requests within two months. To ensure compliance, companies must also inform their staff annually about this right to information.
While the decree mandates transparency, it includes protections for individual privacy, prohibiting access to the specific pay stubs of individual colleagues. Employers may choose various methods to fulfill their annual information obligations, such as email, company intranets, or physical notice boards.
