Italy implements new school digital access and homework rules

Italy is implementing significant changes to school administration and digital access. Education Minister Valditara has announced plans for a new circular to prevent teachers from assigning homework late in the evening via electronic registers for the following morning. The goal is to ensure students know their assignments before leaving school and to encourage the use of paper diaries. Additionally, the minister aims to improve coordination among teachers to prevent students from having multiple major exams on the same day.

Simultaneously, a digital transition regarding school electronic registers is causing logistical challenges. Following Law 182/2025, access to these registers now requires the use of SPID or the Electronic Identity Card (CIE), replacing old school-provided credentials. However, many schools have delayed implementation, leading to confusion for families. Data indicates a gap in digital readiness, as only a fraction of the approximately 50 million issued CIEs have active digital credentials, complicating access for parents and students.
