Italy implements major school reforms for 2026/2027 academic year

The Italian Ministry of Education and Merit is implementing several reforms for the 2026/2027 school year. Key changes include a total ban on smartphones in classrooms and the introduction of Artificial Intelligence into teaching. New disciplinary rules will replace simple suspensions with mandatory educational activities or community service. Additionally, the ministry is introducing the 'AscoltaMi' psychological support service for students and requiring parental consent for extracurricular courses on sensitive gender and sexuality topics.

Academic updates include the optional introduction of Latin in middle schools, increased focus on grammar and cursive writing, and changes to the high school graduation exam. The reform also addresses technical and professional institutes through a new four-year program followed by two years at ITS Academies.

Economically, families are facing rising costs for the new school year. Estimates suggest an average expenditure of 673 euros for school supplies and 545 euros for textbooks, a trend that is increasing social inequality. Meanwhile, regional calendars have been finalized, with most Italian schools resuming classes in mid-September.
