Italy implements new teacher recruitment procedures for 2026

The Italian school system is undergoing significant changes to teacher recruitment and substitution procedures for the 2026 academic year. A key focus is the ‘mini call veloce’, an extraordinary inter-provincial procedure specifically for support teachers to fill remaining vacancies. This process allows candidates to compete for positions outside their home provinces, with approximately 3,931 positions available, primarily in Northern Italy.

To address the issue of precarious employment and the accumulation of long waiting lists, the Ministry of Education is considering a temporary suspension of new teacher competitions. This strategy aims to prioritize hiring from existing regional lists and the GPS (Graduatorie per le Supplenze) rankings. This shift toward a ‘dual channel’ recruitment system seeks to reduce teaching discontinuity, particularly in support roles.

Additionally, a new algorithm has been introduced for the GPS ranking updates. While this may result in a slower ranking progression due to fewer involuntary renunciations, the Ministry and unions expect it to provide more precise assignments. The system is designed to better accommodate teachers who previously lost opportunities due to technicalities in the automated nomination process.
