Italy implements new welfare and health initiatives for the elderly
Italian regional and national authorities are launching new initiatives to support the elderly population and address demographic aging.
In Ragusa, the “Circolo 65” project has been announced. This initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Sport, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry for Family, aims to promote active aging and healthy lifestyles for individuals aged 65 to 99. The project provides economic support to sports associations and third-sector entities that implement physical activity programs designed to improve physical and mental well-being. Applications for the project must be submitted by September 18, 2026.
In Tuscany, the regional government has approved a welfare package to tackle the challenges of an aging population. This includes an additional 10 million euro allocation specifically intended to reduce waiting lists for Residential Care Facilities (RSA). The strategy also introduces the “Sostegno Fragilità Anziani” program, which provides home visits and support for individuals over 70 experiencing fragility. Furthermore, new guidelines for “social prescription” have been approved, allowing health professionals to direct patients toward community activities, volunteering, and cultural engagement to improve social and relational health.
