Italy school year 2026-2027: regional starts and reforms

The 2026-2027 Italian school year will feature staggered start dates across different regions, beginning with Bolzano on September 7 and concluding with Puglia on September 17. While the Ministry of Education and Merit sets national holidays and exam dates, individual regions determine specific lesson start and end dates.

Significant educational reforms are also being implemented. These include the structural adoption of the '4+2' model, which links four-year secondary education with two-year technical specialization at ITS Academies. Technical institutes will undergo a gradual reform to strengthen STEM subjects and industry connections. Additionally, the curriculum will see the introduction of artificial intelligence as a transversal tool, with more organic integration expected by the 2027-2028 school year. Other changes include a clearer distinction between History and Geography in high schools and enhanced focus on grammar and cursive in primary schools.
