Italy fiscal updates: VAT controls, tax deductions, and social support

Italy is implementing several fiscal and social measures affecting taxpayers and vulnerable populations. The Agenzia delle Entrate is intensifying VAT controls by cross-referencing electronic invoices with income declarations and monitoring the connection between POS terminals and cash registers. Data shows a €13.5 billion increase in taxable turnover, though the Court of Auditors notes this may be influenced by inflation rather than just improved enforcement.

Regarding housing, current tax deductions for renovations and energy efficiency are scheduled to decrease in 2027, with the government considering extensions to prevent a significant reduction in household tax relief. Additionally, new regulations regarding inactive VAT numbers specify that the 60-day closure period begins once communications are made available in the taxpayer's digital 'fiscal drawer'.

On the social welfare front, local administrations are providing targeted support. Segrate is implementing the 'Carta Dedicata a Te' for the 2026-2027 biennium to assist families with essential food purchases. In Sambuca di Sicilia, municipal funds are being used to reimburse travel expenses for oncology patients, offsetting regional budget cuts to ensure continued access to medical care.
