Italy's Temporary Diesel Tax Cut Saves Limited Pump Prices
The Italian government approved a temporary cut to the diesel excise tax of €0.17 per litre, effective from 28 July until 6 August 2026. The measure, announced by Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, is intended to ease the impact of rising diesel prices after the Middle‑East fuel‑supply crisis and is estimated to cost the state about €125 million. It applies only to diesel; gasoline prices remain unchanged.
Official data from the MIMIT observatory on 29 July showed the average self‑service diesel price on the national road network at €2.074 €/L, a drop of only around €0.11 €/L nationwide in the two days after the cut. The reduction was far smaller than the €0.17 €/L subsidy, and many stations did not pass the discount to consumers. Codacons filed a formal complaint alleging aggravated fraud and the Garante for competition launched an investigation. Over 3,000 fuel stations have been placed under observation for possible non‑compliance, with regional disparities—Campania recorded the smallest price fall of about €0.0066 €/L.
