Italy increases funding for women victims of violence
Italy is increasing resources for the ‘Reddito di Libertà 2026’, a financial contribution designed to support women victims of violence in achieving personal and housing autonomy. The Department for Equal Opportunities has transferred an additional 3.9 million euros to INPS, prioritizing applications that were previously eligible but lacked funding. For 2026, the monthly contribution will rise to 530 euros, providing up to 12 monthly payments totaling 6,360 euros.
To qualify, applicants must be residents in Italy, undergoing support through a recognized anti-violence center, and have their need certified by social services. The benefit is also available to EU citizens and non-EU citizens with valid residency status, including refugees. Applications are processed through local municipalities rather than directly by the individual at INPS.
These measures address a broader context of economic instability for women in Italy. Data from Istat indicates that 40% of Italian women have experienced economic violence, while the Edufin Index 2025 shows women report lower financial literacy scores than men. A national forum on female financial independence, featuring former minister Elsa Fornero, will address these disparities, noting that 13.6% of women living with a partner do not consider themselves economically independent.
