Italy increases healthcare and medical school enrollment spots

Italian universities have announced a significant increase in available positions for healthcare profession degree courses. For the upcoming academic year, 38,184 spots are available across 22 different healthcare disciplines, representing a 3.6% increase compared to the previous year. Nursing remains the largest sector, accounting for 20,672 positions, or approximately 54.1% of the total.

In the field of medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine, there is a diverging trend. While the total number of available spots for medicine and surgery has risen to approximately 27,000 from 24,000 the previous year, the number of applicants has decreased. For the 2026/2027 academic year, total applicants for the open semester filter dropped by over 4% to 62,200.

In Milan, specifically, enrollment in the filter semester saw a decline to 4,477 candidates from 4,912 the previous year. This includes applicants for the University of Milan (Statale) and the University of Bicocca. The admission process for healthcare professions involves various deadlines for state universities through September 10, with entrance exams scheduled for September 16.
