Italy energy crisis: inflation hits 4.2% as SMEs face rising costs

Italy is facing significant economic pressure as inflation rose to 4.2% in September, up from 3.3% in August, driven largely by a 22.3% increase in energy prices. This spike has triggered widespread alarm across various sectors.

In Piedmont, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) reportedly incurred 262 million euros in extra electricity costs over the past year. The tax burden on energy bills in the region is 47.4% higher than the EU average, with smaller businesses facing a fiscal gap of 75.5% compared to larger, more energy-intensive companies.

Federitaly, representing the 'made in Italy' sectors, has called for a structural government plan to address rising energy and fuel costs, warning that energy expenses now exceed 10% of turnover for many agri-food companies. Similarly, Assitol is demanding immediate support for businesses and a long-term strategy for food security.

In the agricultural sector, organizations like Cia are reporting a crisis due to high production costs and low product prices. Meanwhile, consumer groups are advising households to switch to the free market to mitigate rising utility bills, noting potential savings of up to 24% compared to protected service tariffs.
