Italy school costs rise amid 3.3% inflation

Italian families are facing significant economic pressure as the new school year begins, driven by rising inflation and the high cost of educational materials. Istat reports that the national consumer price index rose by 3.3% year-on-year in August 2026, largely fueled by increases in energy costs.

Educational expenses are a major contributor to this burden. While textbook prices have seen an average increase of 2.3%, consumer groups like Unione Nazionale Consumatori warn that the actual cost to families is much higher. This is due to the widespread use of 'recommended' books, which schools use to bypass official spending caps. Furthermore, the margin allowing schools to exceed these caps was recently increased from 15% to 20%.

Estimates suggest that the total expenditure for textbooks alone could reach one billion euros. For individual students, the costs vary significantly: middle schoolers face an average of 217 euros, while high schoolers face 342 euros. Students in classical lyceums face even higher costs, often exceeding 1,000 euros when including dictionaries and other supplies. There is also a notable geographic disparity, with families in Southern Italy, such as in Bari, reporting higher average costs for secondary education compared to those in the North.
